I met Scott, Katie, Katie’s mom and dad as well as Scott’s mom a few weeks ago during what is called ‘designer day’ for one of our local wedding coordinator’s office (Mendocino Weddings + Events – more information about them is here and here).
I have to be completely honest, these first dates are always rough – no one there knows me (except for the coordinators:) and they really have come in at a pretty early stage of their wedding planning, and more than likely, really don’t know what they’re looking for in a wedding photographer.
I have about 45 minutes to introduce myself, tell a little background about me, show them some sample work, hand out various pieces of paper and ask questions. In this time I also get to feel them out, see if these are clients that I’d actually want to work with. With me, it’s not just the bride and groom ‘interviewing’ me, it’s also me interviewing them. I put a couple weddings on my calendar each month, and that’s it. These clients have to be pretty awesome and a really good fit in order to make the calendar – and when I walk into a designer day with Sonya, I already know they are pretty awesome.
So I gave my talk, asked questions, passed around samples and waited… A few short hours later I received word they would be going with me.
Yes internet, I may or may not have done a little happy dance right there while I was reading the email
During the meeting, Scott and Katie had expressed their wishes to have an engagement session at their Alma mater UC Davis’ Arboretum as well as a pizza place they would frequent while in school.
Davis is approximately 4 to 4 1/2 hours from Fort Bragg, but if it took me to agree to a engagement session in Davis to book them, so be it! I really wanted this particular wedding, and to top it off, this is why I still drive my commuter car, the lovely Toyota Yaris. I purchased this little car 5 years ago while community back and forth from home to college 1 1/2 hour one way everyday. The MPG is awesome
After putting off the engagement session two or three weeks in a row because of weather, we bit the bullet and did the session on Friday. Fort Bragg still had some crazy weather, but Scott had assured me it looked beautiful in Davis…big blue sky, puffy white clouds…yes, my heart was very happy!
Now with that said, I was pretty sick. I’ve been a mom for 14 years and a photographer for 3. I’ve learned a few things, and one of them is just to suck it up and go on. So this is what I did. I sucked it up.
Yes, literally. I had some pretty awesome cough syrup before I left town and brought it with me just in case I needed more on the way home. I’m not sure if they noticed how sick I was, but my voice was pretty raspy. Raspy like I was a chain smoker kind of raspy.
And to top it off I wasn’t much of a conversationalist that day either. This actually makes me really sad because I love getting to know my clients better – it makes our relationship just that much more strong so on the day of the wedding we’re already friends, I can come in and just feel that much more comfortable around them. I hope I didn’t fail in the ‘getting to know you better’ category, but if I did Scott and Katie – I’m so sorry. I promise, when you come back into Fort Bragg, I want to make it up!
But enough of that – what really matters is the photos. Katie is a show-stopper. She is so photogenic it’s not even funny.
In fact, I am even more excited about our bridals than normal, because as you may or may not know – this is one of my most favorite parts of the entire wedding day. Oh Katie…we’re going to have a blast!
I hung out with them for about 3 1/2 hours, just walking around and stopping in spots we thought would be fun.
Here are a couple from Woodstock’s Pizza restaurant…
And then a bunch from the Arboretum…
Thank you again Scott and Katie. I was sick, the weather was iffy and well…other things we had to deal with that afternoon…but the pictures turned out beautiful and the late lunch was delicious! (thank you again for that treat, I really appreciated
I’m looking forward to seeing a Save the Date card with a photo from the session on it, I wonder which one you’ll choose?
All my best,
