Happy Monday! I know, these Q&As are running on random days, and it’s a little confusing when to expect them. I’d like to come up with a catchy title for the same day each week to run them, but honestly I’m just not that creative…
Today I’m featuring Sonya from Mendocino Weddings + Events. If you’ve ever had the chance to experience her first rate service personally, I don’t need to go any further into my explanation of how wonderful she is and what a great experience she gives her clients. But if you haven’t, then let me paint a picture for you…
She’s more than just helpful, more than just a ‘coordinator’. She goes above and beyond, and far exceeds anyone’s expectations. She could be juggling two or three weddings in one weekend, but the only person that would know this would be her. What I love about her even more than being a fine business women, is that she puts her family first. As you may already know by reading my blog, I adore my family, and this is why I feel so connected to Sonya.
Sonya and I grew up in the same small town and know a lot of the same people. I feel more connected to her because of this, and is just another reason why I love working with her so much.
Enough of the gushing…let’s get onto the good stuff!
Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and your company?
Me: Born and raised on the beautiful Mendocino Coast, I am no stranger to this area. I grew up in an environment of hospitality and have learned to pay close attention to detail from my dear mother who still helps me on most events today. I am very active in the community, a blessed mother to my children Kindyl and Gage, as well as happily married to my own sweetie which we will celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary on March 5th!

How did you get into Wedding Coordinating and Event Planning?
Planning parties, events, holidays with 40 plus people surrounding my dinner table has always come easy to me! A passion for sure… so after I was so lucky to stay at home and raise my kids for their youngest years, the previous owner of Mendocino weddings was ending her 28 year career. At the same time I was doing some soul searching for the next chapter of my life, so I thought about it briefly, new it was my calling for sure, so I bought it and after 4 years I am in LOVE with my decision!
Q. What is your favorite part of the Wedding day/preparation/process?
I love every part of the wedding planning process. Getting to know the couple, scheming up every last detail, seeing it all come together during the set up process and most important the tender moments of the bride and whomever is so special to her right before they walk down the isle!
Q. What is the most awkward moment you’ve experience while on the job?
Ohhhh…. I would have to say there have been a few” WOW” moments, however since I hold all couples dear to my heart I cannot share in the event that they see this post and feel that I am sharing their situations that may have hiccuped their day a bit. I will say some are pretty funny though!
Q. What is your favorite venue, and why?
This is really a difficult question. Mendocino coast has so many spectacular venues that all carry their own quality, but if I had to choose one for my own favorite reasons it would have to be the Spring Ranch Barn. This location is riddled with history, texture, and detail for the eye to wonder and wonder. A timeless treasure for sure!
Q. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding coordinators/ event planners just getting started?
Well I am forever learning from each wedding and the process. For me, I would say to remember that it is not about you or your likes, dislikes, and must haves, but rather all about creating just what the couple envisions for their special day.
Q. If you could travel to any city in the world purely for the food, where would you go?
I feel like I only started to taste the food in Paris France, so I would say return and continue the journey!
Q. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
This is a hard one because I LOVE where I live, however I Like the idea of living the way the Native Americans lived traveling season to season to the perfect environment for that time of year. Since I will not be foraging for acorns, fishing and hunting for my food I would choose Tropical paradise in the winter, Europe in the spring, and settling into my home base Comptche for the summer! This is a great idea!!
Q. If you couldn’t be a Wedding Coordinator/ Event Planner, what would you be?
Oh my there are so many wants on my list! I would have to say a teacher for the youth. They hold so many lessons for all of us to learn and their they are so FUN!

Q. Chocolate or vanilla?
Velvety, chocolate ganache!
